Margot Robbie to Star in the Robin Hood Sequel
Margot Robbie is set to star as Maid Marian in a new film set in an alternate Robin Hood universe.
As reported by Variety, Robbie will star and produce the film, which currently has the title Marian. The script was written by newcomer Pete Barry and was bought by Sony after a bidding war.
The character has traditionally been portrayed as Robin Hood’s love interest, but in the Robbie-fronted Marian, she will take centre-stage. While there are several studios working on new takes on the “Robin Hood” tale, this is the only film that focuses on the heroic damsel. The role is described as “serious and truly gritty” and the film is said to have a tone that’s like “Braveheart meets Game Of Thrones”. The director and any of Robbie’s co-stars have yet to be revealed.
The synopses for Marian reads: “After a conspiracy to conquer England in which the love of her life Robin Hood dies before her eyes, Marian picks up the cause to lead her people into a pivotal war. She comes to power, charging into a battle that will not only decide the fate of the kingdom but will see her don the mantle of the man she loved. In the process, she rises as a legend herself.”
The movie will be produced by Robbie's LuckyChap Entertainment. The company are also working on Gotham City Sirens, the DC spinoff focusing on Harley Quinn, her Suicide Squad character.
Since breaking out in The Wolf of Wall Street, Robbie has enjoyed a string of high-profile roles. 2016 was a busy year for Margot as she starred on the big screen in Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, David Yates’ The Legend of Tarzan and in David Ayer‘s DC Comics ensemble Suicide Squad. She’s set to reprise the Harley Quinn role in Ayer’s upcoming Gotham City Sirens. Meanwhile, the actress is set to star opposite Sebastian Stan in the Tonya Harding biopic I, Tonya and to appear in Sony’s Beatrix Potter adaption, Peter Rabbit.
